U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke today announced the 30 members of the Civil Nuclear Trade Advisory Committee. The Committee advises Locke on expanding U.S. civil nuclear export opportunities that keep this vital sector globally competitive.
The United States has unmatched experience in civil nuclear technology, operating the world’s largest fleet of civil reactors and providing world-class technology and services across the globe.
“Civil nuclear energy has a crucial role to play in powering the global economy while addressing concerns over energy security and climate change,” said Locke. “U.S. civil nuclear technology and services are world-class, and our industry is well-placed to work with countries around the globe interested in developing peaceful nuclear power programs.”
It is estimated that the global market for civil nuclear technology will be $500 billion over the next 10 years. This growing industry offers the United States opportunities to create new jobs both at home and abroad.
Committee members serve a two-year term and make recommendations to the Secretary of Commerce concerning trade policy development, improving the competitiveness of U.S. industry and its ability to compete for international contracts for civil nuclear products and services. The Committee will also identify priority markets for U.S. civil nuclear products and services in the short- and long-terms.
Previous Committee recommendations to the secretary included encouraging financing for nuclear projects, increasing the number of trade missions to promote U.S. products and services in foreign markets, and developing a web portal to consolidate information on relevant regulations and agreements for U.S. industry and foreign buyers.
Committee members represent the entire spectrum of the civil nuclear supply chain from uranium mining to reactor design and transportation and waste management.
