Capturing Search Results

It is possible to print, save or email catalog records; either one record at a time, or by selecting groups of records from a search results screen.

Print, Save or Email:

Print, Save or Email a Titles List

Printing and saving work in exactly the same way. When printing or saving a single catalog record, or sets of records, this is the most efficient way to capture only record information (without other elements of the screen display such as graphics, navigation buttons, etc.)

When displaying a Titles List, the "save, print and email" table appears at the bottom of the display:

To Print or Save all of the displayed catalog records:

  1. Select the radio button next to All on Page.
  2. Select a download format: Brief, Very Brief (no annotation) or Full.
  3. Click on the "Format for Print/Save" button.
  4. A new screen will display containing printable/saveable records.
  5. Print using the browser's Print function, or
Save using the browser's Save As function (supply a filename when prompted, and change the type to Text File).

To Print or Save selected catalog records from the display:

  1. Select the radio button next to Selected on page or Selected all pages.
  2. Mark individual records by selecting the check box next to each desired record number.
  3. Select a Download Format: strong>Brief, Very Brief (no annotation) or Full.
  4. Click on the "Format for Print/Save" button.
  5. A new screen will display containing only printable/saveable versions of the record set.
  6. Print using the browser's Print function, or
Save using the browser's Save As function (supply a filename when prompted and change the type to Text File).
To Email all catalog records from the display:
  1. Select the radio button next to All (this page only).
  2. Enter a valid Email address in the blank box provided (if this box is left blank or an invalid email address is entered, an error message will appear).
  3. Click on the "Email" button
  4. A message displays confirming the search results have been mailed.
To Email selected catalog records from the display:
  1. Select the radio button next to Selected on page or Selected all pages.
  2. Mark individual records by selecting the check box next to each desired record number.
  3. Enter a valid Email address in the blank box provided (if this box is left blank or an invalid email address is entered, an error message will appear).
  4. Click on the "Email" button.
  5. A message displays confirming the search results have been mailed.

Note: As a default, the number of records included in a Titles List is set to "25 records per screen." The number of records per screen also determines the number of records that can be printed, saved, or emailed at a time. To increase the number of records per screen, use the drop-down menu found at the bottom of each search page.

Print, Save or Email An Individual Record Display

When viewing a single record, the "Save, print and email" table appears at the bottom of the record display:

To Print or Save the displayed catalog record:

  1. Select a download format: Brief, Very Brief (no annotation) or Full.
  2. Click on the "Format for Print/Save" button.
  3. A new screen will display containing only a printable/saveable version of the record.
  4. Print using the browser's Print function, or
Save using the browser's Save As function (supply a new filename when prompted and change the type to Text File).
To Email the displayed catalog record:
  1. Enter a valid Email address in the blank box provided (if this box is left blank or an invalid email address is entered, an error message will appear).
  2. Select the "Email" button.
  3. A message displays confirming the search results have been mailed.

Save in MARC format

NLS catalog records may only be SAVED in the MARC Communications Format. These formatted records may then be imported into any MARC based catalog system, but require special software to view.

To Save catalog records in MARC Communications format:

  1. If necessary, mark individual records by selecting the check box next to each desired record number.
  2. Select the radio button next to All on Page, Selected on Page or Selected all Pages.
  3. Select the MARC from the Select Download Format list.
  4. Click on the "Format for Print/Save" button.
  5. A new screen will display MARC versions of the record set.
  6. Save the MARC records using the browser's Save As function (supply a new filename for the records and change the type to Text File).

Note #1: While it may appear that it is possible to Email MARC records, it is not. If the radio button for MARC (ONLY save) is selected and the record(s) are emailed, they will be received in the standard ASCII format.

Note #2: As a default, the number of records included in a Titles List is set to "25 records per screen." The number of records per screen also determines the number of records that can be printed, saved, or emailed at a time. To increase the number of records per screen, use

Screen Print

Print any screen or display in the Library of Congress Online Catalog by selecting the browser's Print function (from an icon or menu) while viewing the screen.

Note: All information (including graphics, navigation buttons, etc.) will be included in the printout. However, this is the only way to print a Headings List, a Titles List, References and Scope Notes, and displays: Subjects/Content, Brief Record, and MARC Tags.
