Biography/History noteAdolph Bolm (b. Sept. 25, 1884 in St. Petersburg, Russia; d. April 18, 1951 in Hollywood, Calif.) was a ballet dancer, choreographer, ballet master, and dance teacher.
SummaryThe collection documents Bolm's career both in Russia and the United States with various companies, including Ballets Russes de Serge Diaghilev, Ballet Intime, Adolph Bolm Ballet, Chicago Civic Opera, San Francisco Opera, and Ballet Theatre. It contains photographs, including many of Bolm in costume for various dance roles and with Tamara Karsavina, his frequent partner from the Ballets Russes. There is a large amount of correspondence from Bolm's frequent collaborator, composer John Alden Carpenter. The collection contains performance reviews and news articles about Bolm, as well as notes and drafts for a biography of Bolm by Rosalind Shaffer de Mille. In addition, there are materials relating to Anna Pavlova, including correspondence and a photograph. The collection also includes business papers, music scores, a small amount of costume designs, and two autograph books.
