Tobacco Products
Labeling
FDA issued new rules for a variety of tobacco products, including cigarette warning labels, smokeless tobacco product warning labels and “light,” “low,” “mild” or similar descriptors for tobacco products. These new laws are expected to have a significant public health impact by decreasing the number of people using tobacco products, resulting in lives saved, increased life expectancy, and lower medical costs.
FDA's authority includes*
- Requiring larger, more prominent cigarette health warnings on all cigarette packaging and advertisements. These graphical warnings bring Americans face to face with tobacco-related disease on every cigarette package and advertisement.
- Restrictions on tobacco products labeled or advertised with the terms “light,” “low,” “mild” or similar descriptors.
- Requiring larger and more visible smokeless tobacco warnings on packages and advertisements.
*The implementation date is uncertain, due to ongoing proceedings in the case of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. v. U.S. Food and Drug Administration, No. 11-1482 (D.D.C.), on appeal, No. 11-5332 (D.C. Cir.).
