A Power Point Training Tool
Overview and Purpose
The National Center on Elder Abuse prepared this PowerPoint slide presentation to educate, increase awareness, and explain the problem of elder abuse to faith community leaders. The training underscores the unique role that the faith community can play in assisting victims. The content suggests ways to engage clergy and lay representatives as sentinels, linking those in need of support to available services.
This community presentation is suitable for representatives from all denominations, lay and clergy members, and religious leadership.
Customizing a Presentation
The presentation is comprised of fifty-two PowerPoint slides. A full presentation will take approximately two hours, with ample time for breaks, discussion, and questions.
For a shorter session, you may want to selectively choose slides that are appropriate for the audience and the time available. You should review all of the slides and select those that are most appropriate for a particular training opportunity.
A "Notes Page" for each slide includes information to assist presenters, including:
- Helpful hints
- Points to emphasize
- Discussion questions
- Suggestions for customizing the presentation to the state or local community where it will be delivered
When you edit, shorten, or customize the presentation, the PowerPoint will prompt you, for example, to include important aspects of your state elder abuse/adult protective law, reporting requirements, important state and local phone numbers, among other information. Blank slides are included to assist you in customizing this presentation.
Guidelines: Lead and Co-presenters
We anticipate that the lead presenters of this training will be representatives of state or local elder abuse coalitions, adult protective services (APS), area agencies on aging, or educators of different religious denominations.
If you are the lead presenter but not a specialist in APS, it is highly recommended that a representative from state/local APS be invited to serve as a co-presenter. The session will be significantly enriched by case examples and experience drawn from the APS program participation. A representative of the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program should also be invited to participate in the ombudsman services segment of the presentation.

Instructions for Use:

- Edit and customize the PowerPoint for your own needs as suggested in the "Presentation Notes."
To access "Presentation Notes"
- Select "View' and "Slide Sorter" to review the entire presentation.
- Select "View Notes Page" for each slide to find customization tips and discussion aides.
- Print out the "Notes Page" for all of the slides. This material will be helpful as you develop the final agenda and presentation.
