Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) Fellowships
Fellowship Opportunities in Federal Technology Transfer
The NIH Office of Technology Transfer has postdoctoral fellowship opportunities available under the
Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) authority to qualified candidates in the field of technology
transfer. These fellowships enable candidates to combine their science background with training and
experience in the technology transfer field. Fellows work with OTT marketing, patenting, and licensing
staff, as well as researchers and technology and business development people within and outside NIH.
Fellows are required to spend 20% of their training time in an assigned NIH laboratory and 80% at OTT.
Duties & Responsibilities
Interns will receive hands-on specialized training.
Interns will be mentored in and assigned tasks related to:
- Intellectual Property Basics
- Marketing of Technology
- Introduction to Licensing and Negotiation Practices
- Technology Transfer Policy
- Monitoring of Technology Development
- Customer Service and Interpersonal Relations
Who May Apply
- Candidates must have received a Ph.D., M.D., D.D.S., D.O., Pharm.D., or equivalent degree in biomedical or related science.
- Candidates must have no more than five years of relevant postdoctoral research experience.
- Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Special notes
- Fellows are not employees of the Federal Government. As such, Technology Transfer IRTA trainees may not
represent the Government in negotiations or signing documents on behalf of the Government.
Compensation & Bennefits
Stipends
- Stipends are determined by the level of education and the number of years of experience post-graduation, and are based on approved Postdoctoral IRTA stipend ranges.
- Stipends are paid monthly in arrears.
- Annual stipend increases may be given on a Fellow's anniversary date.
Health Insurance
- An approved plan of health insurance is available through the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences (FAES).

- a request for Intramural Research Training Award (NIH Form 2590), and
- a signed statement of interest explaining why you are interested in a fellowship with the Office of Technology Transfer, and
- three letters of recommendation.
