A Partner for Over 50 Years

For more than 50 years, USAID has partnered with the people of the Middle East to build a peaceful and prosperous future. Our programs have directly contributed to improvements in infrastructure, health, education, governance, and economic growth. USAID helped eradicate malaria in Jordan, and we were key to restoring and reopening the Suez Canal in Egypt.

Today, USAID's priorities in the Middle East are to:

emptyEnhance participatory democracy and improve  transparency and accountability
emptyExpand inclusive economic growth
emptyEngage civil society, youth, and women
emptyIncrease employment and education opportunities to give youth job skills and roles in society
emptySupport a comprehensive peace in the Middle East
emptyAdvance U.S. initiatives related to Global Health, Feed the Future, and Global Climate Change

USAID continues to respond to the changes in this dynamic region while drawing on our expertise and staying grounded in our core strength of helping people who are struggling to make a better life. Today, as the Middle East undergoes a historic transformation driven by citizens demanding basic freedoms, we are working to make our assistance more agile and flexible in order to best support the legitimate aspirations of ordinary people.

USAID is addressing underlying factors driving unrest in the region by fostering inclusive economic growth, robust political processes, and improved governance. In Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Yemen, we are seizing the new openings available to partner with these countries. USAID is helping to strengthen governmental institutions to ensure that they can address economic grievances and provide for the legitimate needs of their citizens. USAID is also embracing new and varied local partners in civil society and the private sector. For example, in Egypt since the revolution, a striking 40 percent of USAID grant recipients are new partners for USAID.

USAID's Opportunities in the Middle East

The Middle East has enormous potential and faces considerable challenges. Approximately two-thirds of the population is under age 30, and the region has the highest rate of unemployment among developing regions. Just 26 percent of women in the Middle East participate in the workforce, compared with 54 percent elsewhere. USAID offers tools that can help the people of the Middle East meet some of these challenges, develop opportunities, and increase the ability for all to participate more fully in the political and economic life of their societies.
