1. Constable's Great Landscapes: The Six-Foot Paintings

image: John Constable, The White Horse, 1818-1819, Widener CollectionEnglish artist John Constable regarded the six-foot-long landscapes that he began to paint in 1818–1819 as his most significant achievements. The catalyst for this exhibition, on view from October 1 to December 31, 2006, was the recent cleaning of his full-size oil sketch for The White Horse  (National Gallery of Art), which revealed essentially a lost masterpiece under layers of disfiguring 19th-century overpaint. Visit our Web site for more information on Constable and this exhibition.

3. British Collection Tours

image: Sir Thomas Lawrence, Lady Mary Templetown and Her Eldest Son, 1802, Andrew W. Mellon CollectionThe great flowering of English landscape came during the first half of the 19th century, primarily in the paintings of two masters, John Constable and J.M.W. Turner. With their fresh vision and powerfully original styles, Constable and Turner profoundly influenced the work not only of many subsequent British painters but of countless American and European artists as well. Explore their art, as well as that of their predecessors and contemporaries, in our in-depth Web tours.
