Snoring is caused by a partial blockage of the air passage. While the sleeper breathes in, the air passage between the upper soft palate and the throat or base of the tongue opens and closes. As muscles relax, the blockage -- the area colored orange in the diagram -- causes the tissues to vibrate, producing the snoring noise.
