People with Disabilities

Not all people with disabilities are at high risk for the flu. You are at high risk if you have limited mobility, may come in contact with a sick caregiver, or are unable to communicate symptoms.

  • If you are disabled or care for someone who is, get the flu vaccine as soon as it is available in your area. It is your best protection against the flu.
  • If you have flu-like symptoms, contact your health care provider.

Why does having a disability put me at higher risk for getting the flu?

Not all disabled people are at higher risk for getting the flu or experiencing flu-related complications. Certain groups are at a higher risk of getting the flu or having unrecognized flu symptoms. You are at risk if you:

  • Have limited mobility
  • Can’t limit contact with others who are infected, such as staff or family members
  • Have trouble understanding or practicing preventive measures such as hand-washing
  • Are unable to communicate symptoms
  • Are not monitored closely for symptoms

How can I protect myself from getting the flu?

You should get the flu vaccine as soon as it is available in your area. Have anyone you have regular contact with get vaccinated, too.

In addition, follow our everyday steps to keep yourself healthy this flu season.

I live with or care for someone with a disability. How can I protect him or her from the flu?

If you provide care for a person with disabilities it is important that you take steps to prevent that person from getting the flu and provide help if he or she becomes ill. You should take all necessary precautions to protect yourself and the disabled person from the flu.

If the disabled person does get the flu, follow our suggestions for caring for someone with the flu.

I have the flu. What should I do?

If you have flu-like symptoms, contact your health care provider. In addition, follow our treatment recommendations.
