caBIG® and Pakistan

“The elements of international research have implications for us at home as well.” -Greg Downing, HHS

Background

Chartered in 1983, Aga Khan University (AKU) promotes human welfare through research, teaching, and community service. The university is committed to the principles of quality, access, impact, and relevance. AKU has campuses and programs in Afghanistan, East Africa, Egypt, Pakistan, Syria, and the United Kingdom.

About the Partnership

In 2008, Aga Khan University's new Clinical Research Unit embarked on a search to develop a harmonized and interoperable bioinformatics environment that empowers their research community to manage, share, examine, and apply existing and new knowledge in meaningful and innovative ways across disciplines at its international campuses. After reviewing more than twenty-three commercial, open-source, and academic systems, the university chose to implement caBIG®.

Activities and Milestones

In 2010 the Aga Khan University successfully installed the caBIG® Clinical Trials Suite on a Windows platform and completed preliminary verification and testing processes. In 2011, AKU will begin using caBIG® to manage data from multi-therapeutic trials (not limited to cancer trials).
