Image of the Day High-resolution, detailed imagery of significant environmental events which are visible in remotely-sensed data. An image is produced daily, Monday through Friday, by the NOAA Environmental Visualization Laboratory (EVL).

Dust Storms Product is made using a combination of POES/AVHRR, GOES/Imager, Meteosat/MVIRI, and MTSAT-1R for detection of dust storms.

Fire Product is made from a combination of POES/AVHRR, GOES/Imager, Meteosat/MVIRI, and MTSAT-1R for detection of fires. The data is used to calculate ground temperature and albedo, from which fire spots may be identified by use of a thresholding algorithm. The output from the analysis is a printout of the position and size of the fire spot, together with imagery showing the burning and burn-out areas, smoke, etc. Forest and grassland maps are then used to identify the nature of the ground cover where the fire is located.

Tropical Cyclones Product is made from the POES/AVHRR, GOES/Imager, Meteosat/MVIRI, and MTSAT-1R to improve the lead time for tropical storms forecasting. Satellite images are used to provide the tropical cyclone center locations and track their motion. Volcanoes Product is made from a combination of POES/AVHRR, GOES/Imager, Meteosat/MVIRI, and MTSAT for detecting volcanic eruptions and tracking and analyzing the horizontal extent of volcanic ash clouds. Data from channels 3-5 can give information on plume temperatures and detect "hot spots" at the eruption site.
