The NCIS Behavioral Science Group (BSG), comprised of doctoral level psychologists, delivers operationally-relevant, ethical and empirically-validated psychological consultation and assessment services, research products, and training in support of the strategic goals and mission requirements of NCIS operational and administrative elements.

BSG consultation and assessment products focus on behavioral analysis, damage assessment, special personnel selection programs, threat assessment, risk analysis, polygraph support, employee assistance, deployment  briefings and debriefings, intelligence analysis support, and the insider threat, among other topics.

BSG expertise helps determine the reliability and validity of investigative methods, aids in the development of new testing and assessment methods, and provides crime and intelligence analysis and trend analysis.

BSG also provides applied behavioral science training to counterterrorism, counterintelligence, cyber and law enforcement personnel; for example, courses are offered about the psychology of terrorism and psychology of espionage and sabotage. BSG training also supports administrative operations with instruction on the psychology of leadership, crisis intervention, and deployment issues.
