The Corporation for National and Community Service is committed to engaging all Americans, including veterans and military families, in positively impacting the lives of the military community through volunteering and national service.

As the First Lady has said, only one percent of Americans may be serving in uniform, but each of us has a role to play in supporting our troops and their families.

The President and First Lady, and the Vice President and Dr. Biden are among many who believe that supporting our service members and strengthening our military families is both critical to the Nation’s national security and a national moral obligation. Through the President’s Call to Service, the Corporation is focusing efforts to positively impact veterans and military families.

It is vital that American communities better understand what our troops and their families are facing – and use that knowledge to simply, positively, and productively help those families address the challenges that service to our country has imposed upon them.

The Corporation for National and Community Service is working with veterans in communities across the United States, tapping their unique skills and leadership abilities to tackle assignments ranging from disaster response and mentoring at-risk youth to building homes and helping soldiers returning from war.

Programs such as AmeriCorps and Senior Corps put veterans and military families on a pathway to economic opportunity as they assist others in the military community—and, in doing so, find strength in making an impact on problems here at home.

Around the country, December is welcomed as a month of hope and good cheer. It may be a season for the exchanging of gifts, or for the sharing of time and resources with community members in need. For many, it is also a time to gather together with loved ones to reminisce about cherished memories and create new stories that will be shared in the future. Such stories preserve the legacy of a family, the history of a generation, and perhaps most important of all, the story of a nation.

Service Impact Award Winner: Operation: Military Kids

Veterans and Military Families

As military deployments became more common for National Guard and Reserve troops, the emotional strain hits children left behind especially hard. Operation: Military Kids (OMK) supports military youth age 5-18 with outreach programs to help them cope with the stresses of being away from their parents serving far from home.
