Charlie Murphy is 2013 Chairman

Each year during the week of Valentine’s Day, The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hosts the National Salute to Veteran Patients program which is designed to pay tribute and express appreciation to Veterans. It’s also an opportunity to increase community awareness of VA’s role in providing comprehensive medical care to the nation’s Veterans, encourage citizens to visit hospitalized Veterans and to become involved as volunteers.

Actor and comedian Charlie Murphy, a Navy Veteran, will serve as the Chairman of this year’s salute.

Charlie Murphy evolved from a cast member of the "Chappelle's Show" to top-billed international comedian, performing in venues to sold-out audiences around the globe.

An opportunity for Americans to say Thank You.

“The week of February 14 each year is an opportunity for Americans to say ‘thank you’ to a special group of men and women, more than 98,000 Veterans of the U.S. armed services who are cared for every day in VA medical centers, outpatient clinics, domiciliaries, and nursing homes,” said Secretary Eric K. Shinseki.

During the National Salute, VA invites individuals, Veterans groups, military personnel, civic organizations, businesses, schools, local media, celebrities and sports stars to participate in a variety of activities at the VA medical centers. The activities and events include special ward visits and valentine distributions, school essay contests, special recreation activities and Veteran recognition programs.

Selected cities host concerts that are free to Veterans and their families. Check out the concert schedule for a list of cities hosting the events. VA is grateful to the many organizational donors who make these concerts a success.

The week also provides an opportunity for the community to become acquainted with the volunteer opportunities within the medical center. Contact your nearest VA Medical Center and ask for Voluntary Service to discover the things you, your group or organization can do to salute America's Heroes.
