Public Services at National Archives at Anchorage

Microfilm

The National Archives at Anchorage has extensive microfilm holdings of value for genealogy and academic research. Microfilm records include:

• Federal population censuses for all States, available via our Public Access Computers. Alaska-related microfilm is available for 1900 - 1930
• U.S. Consulate despatches from various countries, most pre-date WWII
• Exploration and Expeditions
• Federal Court Records
• Some immigration records, mostly arrivals at Eagle, Hyder, Ketchikan, Nome and Skagway
• Maritime Records
• Alaska and other Native Americans
• Natural Resources
• Territorial and Regions
• NARA at Anchorage does have microfilm related to military service records, including indexes, Alaska WWI draft cards, the Manhattan Project, and the Atomic Bomb. We do not hold military service records themselves.

Self-service microfilm readers and reader-printers are available without appointment. A 2-hour limit is imposed when researchers are waiting. Researchers from outside a reasonable driving distance from Anchorage may reserve readers for a longer period. Researchers using microfilm do not need a researcher's ID card.

Historical Research

Original records
NARA at Anchorage has more than 9,000 cubic feet of archival holdings, including textual documents, photographs, maps, and architectural drawings, dating from about 1867 to more modern material. As NARA is the repository for documents created by and about the federal government; we do not have state or local records.

Collections are arranged by record group (RG), a body of records from an agency or bureau, identified by an RG number. As the whole group finding aids are created, they will be uploaded to the site. Other finding aids are available by email or at the office.

Self-service microfilm readers and reader-printers are available without appointment. A 2-hour limit may be imposed when researchers are waiting.

Copying Records

There are several options for duplication. Upon request, staff are available to make copies for a fee. Self-service copying is also available for a reduced cost. No-fee options include digital cameras (no flash permitted) and some personal scanners. Please see our most current fee structure for more information. NARA at Anchorage does not control these fees, nor have the ability to negotiate them.

Paper copies from microfilm can be made at self-service copiers or by other arrangement for a fee.

Public Programs

Public programs are always available. We are happy to work with local groups to create new and interesting presentations. Previous groups include K-12 schools, homeschool groups, senior groups, genealogy, University undergraduate and graduate students. Please see the staff contacts page for more information.
