Tax year used in determining my income-related Part B and prescription drug coverage premiums

Which tax year will you use to determine my Medicare Part B (medical insurance) or Medicare prescription drug coverage income-related monthly adjustment amount?

To determine your Medicare Part B premium or Medicare prescription drug coverage income-related adjustment amount, we use your most recent federal tax return information. In most cases, this information is for 2 years prior to the year for which you must pay an income-related premium. For 2012, we generally would use your 2010 tax return information. If information is not yet available for the 2 years prior, we will temporarily use information from the tax year 3 years prior. You may request that we use the tax information from a more recent tax year under certain circumstances.

To report certain changes in income, you can use Form SSA-44, Medicare Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount - Life-Changing Event.

For more information, see Social Security's publication, Medicare Premiums: Rules for Higher Income Beneficiaries, call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) or visit your local Social Security office.
