Options for direct deposit

How do I change my direct deposit options?

You can start, cancel or change your direct deposit by:

  • Using Social Security Direct Deposit  (Only retirement, disability, or survivors benefits recipients may use this option); or

  • Calling us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday; or
  • Visiting your local office.

You also can change or enroll in direct deposit through your financial institution by:

  • Calling or visiting your bank or credit union; or
  • Calling the U.S. Department of the Treasury at 1-800-333-1795.

If you live outside the United States, refer to Payments Outside the United States.

Note:  If you apply for Social Security or Supplemental Security Income, you must get your payments electronically.  If you did not sign up for electronic payments when you applied for benefits, we suggest you do so now.  You must switch to electronic payments by March 1, 2013.

For more information regarding direct deposit, refer to the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Go Direct website.
