  • USS MOUNT WHITNEY, Atlantic Ocean — USS Carr (FFG 52) approaches a distressed vessel off the coast of Sierra Leone Jan. 14. The vessel was spotted by lookouts from USS Mount Whitney. The small craft, with a crew of six, had been at sea for 35 days and was without a working motor, food or water. Within two hours, the craft was resupplied and able to make the journey back to land safely under it's own power, thanks to the crew of USS Carr. The U.S. government and the communities of Menzel Temime and Sfax are working together on two humanitarian assistance projects to help the needy. In Menzel Temine, local authorities, the Association for the Parents and Friends of the Handicapped and officials from the American Embassy in Tunis designed a vocational training center for handicapped adolescents. In Sfax, the American embassy worked with local authorities and the "Association Tunisienne pour la Prévention de la Toxicomanie" to design and construct a center to address prevention and treatment of behavioral problems related to addiction.
