The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) sponsor surveys about education.

The U.S. Census Bureau acts as the collection agent for these surveys, but the data themselves are available through the sponsoring agency.

The data provided to the NCES are used for a wide range of purposes including research, policy development, and legislative action.



Guide to Data Collections for Education

Non-Fiscal Surveys
Annual Census of state education agencies, local education agencies, and public schools.

Collects general descriptive information on all state education agencies, local education agencies, and public elementary and secondary schools in the United States and outlying areas under U.S. jurisdiction.
National Public Education Financial Survey Annual Census of state education agencies.

Collects school finance data derived from administrative and fiscal records from the 50 state education agencies, the District of Columbia, and the outlying areas under U.S. jurisdiction.
Local Education Agency (School District) Finance Survey (F-33) Annual Census of local education agencies.

Collects revenue and expenditure data for all school districts in the United States and the District of Columbia.
Teacher Compensation Survey Annual Collection of characteristics and compensation of public school teachers from participating states.

Includes base and total salaries, expenditures for benefits, highest degree earned, and years of teaching experience.
