NCI Summer Curriculum in Cancer Prevention

Courses

Principles and Practice of Cancer Prevention and Control Course

This four-week summer course provides specialized instruction in the principles and practice of cancer prevention and control. It focuses on concepts, methods, issues, and applications related to this field. Participants will gain a broad-based perspective in terms of available resources, scientific data, and quantitative and qualitative methods. Principles Course dates are: July 8 - August 2, 2013.

Molecular Prevention Course

This one-week course on molecular aspects of cancer prevention follows the Principles and Practice of Cancer Prevention and Control course. It provides a strong background in the molecular biology and genetics of cancer and an overview of basic laboratory approaches applied to cutting-edge research in the fields of molecular epidemiology, chemoprevention, biomarkers, and translational research. Molecular Course dates are: August 5 - August 9, 2013.

Lectures for both courses are scheduled Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 10:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.

The faculty for both courses consists of approximately 85 experts from the NIH, NCI, other government agencies, academia, cancer centers, and public and private organizations.

Eligibility

All courses are open to physicians, scientists, and other health care professionals who have an interest in cancer prevention and control. Recommended prerequisites are epidemiology, biostatistics, and cancer biology. Preference is given to individuals with a doctoral degree.

There is no cost to register or attend either course.

Funding

Domestic Applicants: There is NO funding for domestic applicants. Domestic applicants are U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States or one of its territories. Room, board, and transportation expenses (including parking) are the responsibility of the participant.

International Applicants: Limited funding for living expenses may be available from NCI's Center for Global Health for applicants from low, middle, and upper-middle income countries.

Notification

Registrants will be notified of their status via e-mail after all materials have been received and reviewed. International applicants will be notified on their funding level by the Director, Center for Global Health, NCI.
