The Partnership’s Public Service Fellows program is an opportunity for undergraduate students, graduate students and recent graduates to participate directly in transforming the way government works while developing valuable professional skills.
Fellows’ duties often include event planning and execution, conducting research, writing and preparing correspondence and conducting outreach to external partners, such as government agencies and colleges and universities. The Fellows program also incorporates opportunities for professional and personal growth through workshops and trainings geared toward students and young professionals.

The Partnership for Public Service and Booz Allen Hamilton released today, “#ConnectedGov: Engaging Stakeholders in the Digital Age,” a new report examining how agencies can best use social media to deliver vital services, fulfill their mission and broaden how they engage with the American public.
The report includes a practical guide for federal managers on how they can employ social media effectively and profiles of 7 agency programs using social media to reach their goals and realizing cost-effective and promising results.

Max Stier Commentary: Stop Using Feds as Pawns in Fiscal Cliff Negotiations
Since the November election, our national discourse has been dominated by the march to the edge of the “fiscal cliff”—the urgent need to reach a budget deal that will prevent taxes from going up on the middle class and automatic and deep cuts from taking effect across the government. It’s an important debate with great consequence for our country.
One of the pawns in these negotiations has been the federal workforce. During the past two years, federal pay has been frozen, pension contributions for new employees have been increased, retirements are up, hiring has slowed and agency budgets have been slashed. Several proposals have been floated that would extend the pay freeze, cut federal benefits and limit backfilling of vacant positions.

2012 Best Places to Work Rankings Released
Produced by the Partnership for Public Service and Deloitte, the 2012 Best Places to Work in the Federal Government® rankings offer the most comprehensive assessment of how federal employees view their jobs and workplaces, providing insights into issues ranging from leadership and pay to teamwork and work/life balance.
It has been a challenging year for most federal agencies and employees, and the 2012 results provide valuable perspectives of federal employees on a variety of topics. Agencies are ranked by 10 workplace categories, including effective leadership, pay, teamwork, training and development, and work/life balance. Government-wide, the new rankings show a decline in not just overall employee satisfaction, but in all of these categories.

New Issue Brief: The Presidential Management Fellows Program: First Impressions From the Class of 2011
For 35 years, the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) program has been the government’s premier initiative for recruiting and developing top talent from graduate schools across the country. How is the PMF program meeting the expectations of its participants? What changes need to be made to ensure the program remains a critical pathway to federal service for future government managers and leaders? These are a few of the questions the Partnership set out to answer in its new issue brief. The findings reveal some positive aspects of the program and some warning signals that deserve attention.

Report Release: “The State of the FDA Workforce”
On November 19, the Partnership for Public Service with The Pew Charitable Trusts released, “The State of the FDA Workforce.” Charged with protecting the nation’s public health, it’s vital that the FDA meet its scientific staffing needs. This new report examines the agency’s progress in shoring up its key scientific workforce and includes recommendations for how the FDA can improve its recruitment, hiring and retention practices.

The Partnership for Public Service and the IBM Center for The Business of Government released, “From Data to Decisions II: Building an Analytics Culture.” This second report on using information to measure and improve performance examines what it really takes to build analytics into an agency’s decision-making processes and culture.
The report includes concrete steps for building a disciplined approach to analytics and profiles of seven agencies using analytics to achieve better results.
