Population Health Group

Population Health was created in 2011 in response to a charge by the Veterans Health Administration's Under Secretary for Health. The goal of Population Health is to improve Veteran health status and outcomes by identifying, assessing and reporting on various populations of Veterans and on factors and interventions influencing their health.

Important areas will include but are not limited to how care has changed over the past 5 to 10 years in relationship to geographic location, demographics, benefits, social factors, access to care and services, presence of co-morbidities, period of service factors, war related injuries and exposures, and morbidity and mortality.

This approach:

  • Is Veteran centric
  • Will aggregate information on health care delivery, access, utilization, outcomes, and Veteran survey data to develop an overall assessment of the health of Veterans in care at the Veterans Health Administration
  • Includes surveillance, analysis, evaluation and forecasting
  • Is collaborative and does not duplicate work performed in other VA offices or programs
  • Is cognizant of VA priorities, plans, programs and projects
  • Builds partnerships and relationships to improve system efficiency, accuracy and timeliness

Population Health products will be shared across the VA with a broad range of customers, providing data and information that can be used locally and nationally.
