Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series

About Us

Started in the fall of 1994 under the guidance of then NIH Director Harold Varmus, the Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series (WALS) has hosted more than 500 contemporary research all-stars to date. Created as a way to bring together researchers from across NIH at the same time every week, WALS supports and promotes a community of constant learning and discovery.

From Nobel Laureates to members of the National Academies of Science to pioneers in burgeoning disciplines, the list of WALS speakers grows more prestigious each year. Part of this speaker series includes special lectures named in honor of outstanding members of the NIH community. These include the Margaret Pittman Lecture, the George Khoury Lecture, the Robert S. Gordon, Jr., Lecture, the R.E. Dyer Lecture, the Astute Clinician Lecture, the DeWitt Stetten, Jr., Lecture, the J. Edward Rall Cultural Lecture, the G. Burroughs Mider Lecture, the Marshal Nirenberg Lecture and the Florence S. Mahoney Lecture.

Now entering its 18th season, the Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series is proud to bring to campus another slate of world-renowned scientists from a variety of disciplines for the 2011-2012 schedule.
