Improving the understanding, detection, and management of kidney disease.

NKDEP Laboratory Working Group

Members of the NKDEP Laboratory Working Group (LWG) represent a cross section of leading experts in the clinical laboratory community. The group was created to review and address the problems related to serum creatinine measurement for estimating GFR, and to prepare recommendations to standardize and improve creatinine measurement. Its work was published in Clinical Chemistry, and updated recommendations have been published on this site's Creatinine Standardization Program section. The LWG's creatinine standardization work also involves providing information to ensure appropriate dosing for medications that impact kidney function.

With creatinine standardization efforts well underway, the LWG has turned its attention to issues around urine albumin measurement and reporting. Its first step was to partner with the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine to convene an international meeting on the topic in March 2007. The group of international experts who attended the meeting has identified standardization challenges and developed plans for overcoming them.
