The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a monthly survey of households conducted by the Bureau of Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It provides a comprehensive body of data on the labor force, employment, unemployment, persons not in the labor force, hours of work, earnings, and other demographic and labor force characteristics.

Adjustments to Veteran Population Estimates on February 1, 2013

Beginning with data for January 2013, estimates for veterans in table 5 of The Employment Situation news release incorporate population controls derived from an updated Department of Veterans Affairs´ population model. Other tables in The Employment Situation were not affected. In accordance with usual practice, BLS did not revise estimates in table 5 for December 2012 and earlier months.

Estimates in the online table “Employment status of persons 18 years and over by veteran status, age, and sex” were also affected.

Next Release: March 8, 2013

The Employment Situation for February 2013 is scheduled to be released on March 8, 2013, at 8:30 A.M. Eastern Time.

In 2012, the union membership rate was 11.3 percent, down from 11.8 percent in 2011. The number of wage and salary workers belonging to unions declined over the year to 14.4 million.
