Cyberinfrastructure - For Cancer Prevention and ControlCyberinfrastructure
For Cancer Prevention and Control

In response to the proliferation of electronic data in population health sciences (e.g., clinical and personal health records, mHealth) and the evolution of cyberinfrastructure systems, the Health Communication and Informatics Research Branch (HCIRB) has developed the PopSciGrid conceptual framework to help guide its cyberinfrastructure research initiatives in cancer prevention and control.

The PopSciGrid Community Health Data PortalThe PopSciGrid conceptual framework is based on the NCI cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG®). caBIG ® is an Institute-wide cyberinfrastructure based on high-performance computing networks (i.e., grid technology or cloud computing) and related platforms, concepts, and protocols, including the National Health Information Network.

The NCI Health Communication Research Branch (HCIRB) is engaging the broader community of health scientists and practitioners in transdisciplinary initiatives utilizing advances in grid-based computing and health informatics. These cyberinfrastructure research initiatives are inspired by the National Science Foundation’s Cyberinfrastructure Vision for 21st Century Discovery (2007), and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) vision for 21st century healthcare based on learning healthcare systems and effective use of information (The Computational Technology for Effective Healthcare, 2009; The Learning Healthcare System, 2007.) The PopSciGrid framework supports research and policy for cancer prevention and control that “effectively utilizes cyberinfrastructure, a comprehensive online environment for data harmonization and sharing, trans-disciplinary collaboration, and advanced computational methods, can accommodate data from ‘cells to society’ to accelerate knowledge discovery and transform population health” (Shaikh, Prabhu Das, Vinson, Spring, in press).
