The sanitary conditions in Maputo, Mozambique are un-developed and diarrhoeal diseases are common. Pathogens disposed into aquatic environments constitute a particular risk for waterborne infectious diseases. Our previous studies have shown that shellfish used for consumption in Maputo are highly contaminated with Salmonella, Vibrios, E. coli and Hepatitis A. Now we aim to expand the study to investigate the distribution and transmission routes of pathogens and antibiotic resistance in waters such as waste stabilization ponds used for irrigating vegetables. Here experiments will be carried out in order to optimize pathogen removal. Genotyping will be used for source tracking of pathogens. We will collaborate with biologists and veterinaries in Maputo and communicate the knowledge to the Mozambican authorities for implementation of risk assessment and water sanitary programmes. |

Over 50 million people in the world have been infected by HIV, a majority of whom in sub-Saharan Africa, It is estimated that around 5 million persons worldwide become infected annually and among those 800 000 children. Women account for half of all people living with HIV worldwide, and nearly 60% of HIV infections occur in sub- Saharan Africa, where heterosexual intercourse remains the most common mode of transmission. The prevalence of HIV in Mozambique was estimated to be 16% in 2007. HIV infection is actually the leading cause of maternal mortality in several developing countries and over 90% of HIV infections in children are acquired through transmission from mothers to their infants. Treatment and care of HIV-infected children has not been sufficiently developed hitherto. Interventions in the field of prevention of HIV transmission and management of HIV-infected women and children are important to reduce the impact of this pandemic disease. In this program, research training is integrated with capacity building in prevention, treatment and care of HIV-related illness, |
