JOB SUMMARY:

This position is located in the Voice of America's Africa Division. The incumbent serves as an International Broadcaster for the Horn of Africa Service, with responsibility for conceiving, planning, researching, writing and broadcasting original audio/video scripts of a highly complex nature and for providing Internet content for the website.

The Broadcasting Board of Governors is conveniently located within walking distance to the Green, Yellow and Blue Metro lines.

 

INTRODUCTION TO AGENCY: The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), an independent federal agency, is an exciting, multicultural organization that encompasses all U.S. civilian international broadcasting. The BBG is comprised of the Voice of America, which delivers high quality, multimedia programming in 44 languages to audiences worldwide; the Office of Cuba Broadcasting (Radio and TV Marti); the International Broadcasting Bureau, which provides transmission, administrative, and other support services; and three grantee organizations - Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty; the Middle East Broadcasting Networks (Alhurra TV and Radio Sawa), and Radio Free Asia. Our staff of dedicated professionals serves as an example of a free and independent media, reaching a worldwide audience with news, information, and relevant discussions.

Duties include but are not limited to: 

~Writes news-related stories for use in radio, television and Internet postings. Prepares integrated, highly-targeted, well-balanced scripts, radio or television programs or program segments or Internet web presentations that captures the attention of the audience.

~Writes feature stories on a variety of subjects for radio, television and web posting.

~Adapts and/or translates material. Voices material for or during radio and/or television broadcasts.

~Participates in the development of web, radio or television programs. Initiates coverage of news and features. Participates fully in coverage of major events and in preparation and execution of broadcast remotes. 

~Prepares and/or presents news and feature materials in a studio or on location for radio/television simulcast. May serve as show host.

~Initiates and conducts original interviews with a wide variety of subjects and news sources.

Basic Qualifications: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience which is directly related to this line of work AND the ability to speak, read and write the English and Afan Oromo lanagues that enables you to write, report, interview and announce broadcasts in these languages.

Specialized Experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.  Examples of such experience includes writing, editing, interviewing, reporting and broadcasting stories for radio and television and preparing material for websites.

 


Suitability Determination: If selected, you will be subject to a security investigation to establish your suitability for federal employment. The security investigation will include, among other aspects, a review of your credit and legal history.
