Frequently Asked Questions

1. How can I get the best possible AMP experience?

You’ll need the following free tools to be able to get the full experience out of AMP:

  • At least Flash 9 (but we recommend the latest version of Flash Player)
  • The latest version of JavaScript installed and turned on in your browser

We are aware of certain challenges when trying to view videos while connected to government networks. We are diligently addressing this issue within the highest levels of Army leadership and hope to resolve this problem in the near future. That being said, it never hurts to check with your local DOIM or G6 to inquire about an exception to policy.

2. How do I share this video with my friends? Copying and pasting the link from my browser’s URL bar does not work.

If you’re viewing the video in the main AMP, get the perma-link for a particular video by:

  • 1. Click on "get link" in the middle of the bar beneath the video
  • 2. Copy the link
  • 3. Paste the link wherever you would like to share

You can also skip a step to emailing the link to a friend by clicking "email" instead of "get link."

If you would rather embed the video than use a link - like posting to a forum or your blog, for example – you have the option of directly embedding the playable video onto your site by clicking "get code."

3. Where do I find captioned Army videos?

Army.mil is dedicated to making all of its content accessible to everyone. Part of that effort is captioning AMP videos. The video player will have a [cc] button just beneath the video if there are captions available. Simply click the [cc] button for them to appear.

At first glance, however, it may seem that not many videos are captioned. This is due to a number of factors:

  • We are currently only captioning daily video and audio casts that are produced in-house by Soldiers Radio and Television
  • Videos are uploaded live to AMP before they are captioned
  • Our captioning team can take up to 24 hours to caption a video, but can also take as little as one hour
  • Currently, only our main AMP - and not other, smaller video players on other pages – can accommodate captioning. To see whether or not a video on a smaller player is available with captioning, follow these directions:
  • 1. Play the video you would like to see with captioning
  • 2. Click on "get link" in the bar just beneath the video player
  • 3. Copy the link
  • 4. Paste the link into your browser’s URL bar
  • 5. Click the [cc] button beneath the video, if available

Videos are usually captioned within a few hours. To see only the videos that do have closed captioning, use and bookmark this link:

/media/amp/?channel=captioned

We also have captioned videos on YouTube:

4. I can't find the video I’m looking for! What's the best way to look for it?

This version of AMP has a slightly different hierarchy than our last Army Media Player. Videos are organized in the following ways:

  • Chronologically (the horizontal scroll at the bottom displays the most recent videos on the left-hand side of the screen)
  • Topically ("Related Videos" appears under "Now Playing" on the right-hand side of the screen)
  • By Channels (the tabs below the player organize the videos based on what kind of video they are)
  • By Accessibility (use the following link to see only videos that have been captioned:
    /media/amp/?channel=captioned)

If you are looking for an older video that doesn't appear in one of these fields, try the search bar in the upper right-hand corner. Use these tips for searching videos:

  • Search by subject
  • If you are looking for a video on a certain subject, most likely their keywords are searchable. The most successful search terms are generally strong nouns and verbs. Proper nouns are best.
  • Search by reporter name
  • Most video descriptions include the reporter's name. Searching for a name will display accurate results.

If you are looking for a newscast produced by Soldiers Radio and Television (Army Newswatch, The Army Today, The Army Now, Soldiers Radio News, USACE Update, Environmental Update, One on One or This Week in Army History), use the SRTV Archive link. There, each program is organized by date.

5. Can I use a video posted here for my own personal project?

All content that appears on Army.mil is free of copyright restriction regarding its use, unless specifically noted. We do ask that you give proper credit to the original creator of the content whenever practical.

Please see Privacy & Security for more information.

6. How do I download a video?

In the "NOW PLAYING" box on the right-hand side of the AMP, there is a "Download" link with an arrow next to it (you may have to scroll down within that box).

If you are using Windows, right-click the "Download" link and choose "Save Target As..." The resulting dialogue box will allow you to save the .mp4 movie file wherever you like.

If you are using a Mac, control-click "Download" and choose "Save Link As..."

If you are viewing the video on a different page than the main AMP, such as a News page, or a microsite like Year of the NCO or Warrior Care News, then first complete the following steps:

  • 1. Play the video you would like to download
  • 2. Click on “get link” in the bar just beneath the video player
  • 3. Copy the link
  • 4. Paste the link into your browser’s URL bar
  • 5. Follow the rest of the directions, above

7. I've downloaded the video, but now my computer won't let me play it. What's wrong?

A file downloaded from AMP is in the MP4 format. PC users will find that Windows Media Player – usually the default video player on Windows – does not typically support MP4 files.

Luckily QuickTime 7.1 and above can play MP4s. QuickTime is approved for all Government and Military computers. Visit http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ for more information, or talk to your IT professional at your office.

8. Can I subscribe to these videos via an RSS reader or my iPod?

Yes. Check out our podcasts page for more information:

9. Where do I find videos that were posted before Jan. 2009?

At this time, we do not have the previous version of AMP available. We are working diligently to bring some of the highest-priority videos (like those on Featured Sites) to our new video player. Thanks for your patience.

10. I am looking for a powerful, moving video as an introduction to a presentation. Can you make any recommendations?
