Quiz: How to Use the Histology Coding Rules

  1. There are three independent rules modules in the Histology Coding section of each site-specific set of rules.
  2. The site-specific Equivalent Terms and Definitions provide information about various histologies and how they are related.
  3. Information needed to code the histology can be taken from any part of the pathology report.
  4. The "most representative tumor specimen" may not be the result of the most extensive surgical procedure.
  5. Information from multiple pathology reports may be combined to assign the correct histology code.
  6. The medical record contains a consultation pathology report with a different diagnosis from the facility's pathology report. The facility's pathologist does not comment on the consultation diagnosis. The consultation diagnosis takes priority over the local pathology report.
  7. Any rule in the histology rules may be used to code the histology.
  8. The priority of the histology coding rules is a carefully considered combination of common situations and the prognostic importance of various histology codes.
  9. If there is no pathology or cytology report available in the medical record, the histology can be coded from documented description of the histology in the medical record.
  10. The Multiple Primaries rules determine how many abstracts are to be prepared for the case. The Histology Coding rules determine the best ICD-O-3 morphology code for each abstract.
