U.S. import prices rise 0.6% in January while U.S. export prices increase 0.3%

The price index for U.S. imports increased 0.6 percent in January, following declines of 0.5 percent and 0.7 percent the previous two months. U.S. export prices rose 0.3 percent in January after declining 0.1 percent in December and 0.6 percent in November.

Job openings little changed at 3.6 million in December

There were 3.6 million job openings on the last business day of December, little changed from November. The hires rate (3.1 percent) and the separations rate (3.0 percent) also were little changed in December.

New England:

Total compensation costs in Boston rose 1.6% over the year ending December 2012

New York-New Jersey:

The December New York CPI dropped 0.3% over the month, rose 2.1% over the year

Mid-Atlantic:

Union membership in PA reached a series low in 2012 at 13.5% of wage and salary workers

Southeast:

Private industry compensation costs in Miami up 2.0% over the year ending December 2012

Midwest:

Chicago area consumer prices were down 0.3% in December and were up 1.7% over the year

Southwest:

TX union membership rate up in 2012, but still among the lower statewide rates

Mountain-Plains:

December Midwest CPI down 0.2%; lower motor fuel prices led decline for 3rd month in a row

West:

Los Angeles area prices declined 0.7% in December; up 1.9% over the year
