Radiocast: Navigating the ER - Using Urgent and Emergency Care

Debra: This is Healthcare 411: Information for better health. Don’t wait until an emergency to learn the ins and outs of using urgent or emergency care. AHRQ Director Dr. Carolyn Clancy has some advice:

Dr. Clancy: If it’s a true emergency, seek care immediately. However, the rules for where to seek care and what qualifies as an emergency can vary from plan to plan. The best answer is to call your health plan. But, sometimes deciding if your issue is a real emergency is a judgment call. It’s also important for you to know what kinds of medical problems, conditions, or injuries are defined by your health care plan as emergencies.

Debra: For more information check out AHRQ’s guide called "Questions and Answers About Health Insurance," available online at ahrq.gov/consumer. To learn more about this and dozens of other health topics go to healthcare411.ahrq.gov. Healthcare 411 is produced by AHRQ, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. I’m Debra James for Healthcare 411.
