What is Podcasting?

Podcasting is a way to get audio and video files over the Internet through special Web pages designed to maintain a list of available items and promote new content. These special syndication lists are called RSS Feeds and will usually be identified by an orange RSS icon RSS button graphic for lists of Web pages, or an orange Podcast icon Podcast for lists of audio and video files. You may listen to or view these files on your computer or download them onto a mobile device like a cell phone, an iPod®, or other portable audio or video player. For more on RSS syndication lists, go to our RSS Help page.

How Do I Get Podcasts?

There are many options to find content and automatically retrieve the most recent files.

You may need to download and install appropriate software, such as iTunes, Juice (formerly iPodder), Doppler, or others available without charge on the Internet. Online search engines, such as Google™ and Yahoo®, also include features enabling you to subscribe to and download podcasts without installing software.

You may also listen to podcasts directly from a Web page, such as AHRQ's Healthcare 411 Web site.
