NIH Accepts ACD Recommendations, Approves Four Additional hESC Lines

December 17, 2010

"Today I am accepting the recommendations of the Advisory Committee to the Director, NIH, and approving four additional lines for listing on the NIH Human Embryonic Stem Cell Registry. These four lines include two from Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research in Bangalore, India, and two from Cellartis in Goteborg, Sweden. Today’s approvals bring the total number of lines eligible for use by NIH-funded researchers to 86. I have also accepted the recommendations of the Advisory Committee to the Director, NIH, to not approve three lines submitted by Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois and two lines submitted by the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. In both cases I have determined that there was lack of sufficient evidence presented that the embryos from which the lines were derived were donated in accordance with the informed consent requirements of the Guidelines."

Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., Director, National Institutes of Health
