Research Area: Behavioral Informatics, Open Innovation, Translational Science

Abdul is a Program Director and Behavioral Scientist in the National Cancer Institute's (NCI's) Health Communication and Informatics Research Branch (HCIRB). With a diverse background in the health and technology industries, he specializes in translational science and advanced technology initiatives in behavioral informatics, data science, and open innovation. Abdul has led key public private partnerships between commercial, non-profit, academic, and federal entities, and has been recognized by HHS leadership for advancing innovation in the public sector for directing the first NIH implementation of prize competitions tied to the America COMPETES Act (http://tinyurl.com/dyojlle). He also provides leadership for the Division's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) effort, including the recent launch of a funding opportunity for commercializing evidence-based consumer and clinical health technologies for cancer control (PA-12-196). A seasoned presenter and author, Abdul was the lead editor for a special issue on Cyberinfrastructure for Consumer Health in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, and was recently honored with the Lawrence Green Paper of the Year Award for scholarship contributing to the field of behavioral medicine.

Dr. Shaikh received his Doctorate in Health Behavior and Health Education from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, where he was a Rackham Merit Fellow. He received his Master of Health Science degree in Health Promotion as a University of Toronto Open Fellow, and his Honors Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Toronto. He is an active member of the Society of Behavioral Medicine, the American Public Health Association, and the American Medical Informatics Association.
