 Love is in the Air

Miss You

TAPS Blog | Ahhh… Welcome to February, the month of cupids, romance and rocketing Hallmark profits! Like every other holiday tradition I’ve experienced since my brother’s death, I’ve found that I crave more and more the simplicity of each season.  And Valentine’s Day is no different.  Yes, I’ll still purchase the candy everyone anticipates, and we’ll enjoy a special meal, but I’ll also take time to reflect on what I loved (and still love) about my brother.

 New Traditions

TAPS Blog | After posting a few pictures on Facebook, I realized something that I haven’t really noticed before. I periodically post pictures of Jonathan when I miss him, when I am thinking about something he did, when I write about his life and death, etc. and I realize that people still treat me with kid gloves on that issue. I get the impression they think when I post things about Jon they imagine me curled up in a ball, writhing in my grief... That’s the image I do NOT want to have. I don’t want to perpetuate the notion that every post is from a sorrowful sister. Rather, I want the message of healing to be conveyed.

Many of the runners are family members of our fallen military heroes. Feb 7   Make a Difference & Share Some Love: Easy Ways to Help the Families of Our Fallen Military for Valentine's Day
Press Release |   WASHINGTON – Less than one percent of Americans today serve in the military, but anyone can express their gratitude and support for our nation’s fallen heroes by donating to help the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) and its work to help the grieving families left behind by America’s fallen military heroes. “Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to remember the love we share with those we hold precious in our hearts. For so many families who have lost a loved one in the military, every day without their hero is painful. Valentine’s Day is time to remember the service and sacrifices made by these American heroes and support the families they have left behind,” said Bonnie Carroll, TAPS founder and military widow.

 A New Year = A New Grief?

Posted by:

Booker

TAPS Blog | It’s yet another year beginning without our loved ones...and yet another year ending without them. Does that mean when they say “Out with the old and in with the new” that it applies to our grieving as well? Do we really acquire new grief with the New Year? I am thinking that the answer to that would be undecided, only because in my mind I am saying yes, but in my heart I am saying no (and I can hear my late husband Dre agreeing with me on that part).
