  • June Press Conference

On June 25th, 2009, SAMHSA held a press conference announcing the 20th Anniversary Observance of Recovery Month to be held in September, 2009. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) unveiled materials developed to help communities plan and host Recovery Month events and activities and to help publicize the Agency’s 24/7 toll-free substance use disorder information and treatment referral Helpline, 1-800-662-HELP.

The 2009 Recovery Month theme – “Join the Voices for Recovery: Together We Learn, Together We Heal,” underscores the continued gains our nation is making in addressing addiction treatment. It also supports the need to redouble efforts to reach those who still need to find and successfully complete addiction treatment services and join the ranks of those in long-term recovery from alcohol and drug addiction.

  • September Press Conference

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) unveiled the results of the 2008 National Survey on Drug Use and Health at a press conference on Thursday, September 10. The annual survey, formerly called the “Household Survey” is the largest of its kind, and is the government’s primary vehicle for determining how many persons are abusing illegal drugs, pharmaceuticals, alcohol and tobacco.

The release of the 2008 survey results was the keynote of the 20th annual National Alcohol & Drug Addiction Recovery Month press conference marking a month long observance recognizing the accomplishments of people in recovery, the contributions of treatment providers and advances in substance abuse treatment and recovery throughout the nation.
