Federal Investigative Services

Federal Investigative Services (FIS) is responsible for helping to ensure that the Federal Government has a workforce that is worthy of the public trust by providing both suitability and security clearance determinations. Each year, FIS conducts over two million background investigations—more than 90% of the Government total—using a staff of 8,800 Investigators that includes 2,300 full time employees and 6,500 contractors.

In addition, FIS provides investigative systems training and conducts oversight evaluations of other agencies to review compliance with Federal security regulations.
