Quarterly Banking Profile – Third Quarter 2012

FDIC-insured institutions reported aggregate net income of $37.6 billion in the third quarter of 2012, a $2.3 billion improvement from the $35.2 billion in profits the industry reported in the third quarter of 2011. This is the 13th consecutive quarter that earnings have registered a year-over-year increase. Increased noninterest income and lower provisions for loan losses accounted for most of the year-over-year improvement in earnings.

Insurance Fund Indicators
The Deposit Insurance Fund (DIF) increased by $2.5 billion to $25.2 billion during the third quarter. Estimated insured deposits increased by 2.3 percent. The DIF reserve ratio was 0.35 percent at September 30, 2012, up from 0.32 percent at June 30, 2012, and 0.12 percent at September 30, 2011. Twelve FDIC-insured institutions failed during the quarter.
