About Extramural Research

The Division of Extramural Activities (DEA) of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) is responsible for coordinating a broad range of activities and functions to assure sound and efficient review and management of NIDCD's extramural program activities. The DEA supports several major activities, including the management of the extramural portfolio of grants, the coordination of extramural review and grants management.

The management of the extramural porfolio of grants and coordination of extramural research efforts is conducted by three branches: The Hearing and Balance/Vestibular Branch, the Voice, Speech, Language, Smell and Taste Branch and the Clinical Trials Branch. These branches direct a program of grant and contract support for research and research training in the normal processes and diseases and disorders of hearing, balance, smell, taste, voice, speech, and language so as to ensure maximum utilization of available resources in attaining Institute objectives; assess needs for research and research training program areas; determine program priorities and recommend funding levels for programs to be supported by grants and contracts; collaborate with intramural programs and other research efforts, both NIH-wide and nationally; and consult with voluntary health organizations and with professional associations to identify research needs and develop programs to meet them.

The management of grant review and coordination as well as the awarding and tracking of grants occurs in the Scientific Review Branch and the Grants Management Branch, respectively. These branches are responsible for a variety of activities that include: 1) oversight and direction of scientific review of research and training grant applications and contract proposals; 2) development and implementation of grants management policies; 3) management of the NDCD Advisory Council; 4) management of the Institute's advisory committees; and 5)representing the Institute on several overall NIH extramural policy committees, and coordinating such policy within NIDCD.
