Brassai (Hungarian, 1899-1984)
Les Escaliers de Montmartre, Paris, c. 1930s
Dubbed "the eye of Paris" in an essay by Henry Miller in 1934, extraordinary photographer Brassaï (born Gyula Halasz) captured the essence of nighttime Paris in his photographs, from charming city streets, such as in Les Escaliers de Montmartre, Paris, c. 1930s, reproduced in this poster, to the mysteries of the dark pubs and brothels. In addition to contributing to various magazines and publishing many books, Brassai was a regular photographer for Harper’s Bazaar for 25 years and the recipient of numerous awards, including the first Grand Prix National de la Photographie in Paris in 1978.
