T.K. Logan: What we found was, overall, for every dollar spent on the protective order — on the protective order intervention — there was $30.75 in avoided cost to society, and that is including victim quality of life. At the baseline, the rural women were — there were much higher levels of fear across every kind of fear domain — fear of future harm that we measured. And then at the follow up, again, even though it went down from baseline for both rural and urban, the rural women had sustained higher levels of fear compared to the urban women.
Protective Order Effectiveness
Teri Faragher: It makes a difference that the judge sitting on the bench or the prosecutor, you know, working with the victim understands that their interventions do matter and that most people do get out of abusive relationships at this point, I mean, that it is a reality. We just have to tear down some of those myths because I think they prevent people from doing as good of a job as they could do and, certainly, it's very discouraging to them.
T.K. Logan: It's critical to work with the community because otherwise your research will just sit on the shelf, like how is it going to make a difference? Like I can't … I'm in an ivory tower, and I don't want to do their jobs. Their jobs are very hard — frontline — working with victims every day — I get to be a little bit removed from that. But if I stay too removed, then nothing is going to come of the research, so what's the point? I'm wasting my time.
Teri Faragher: The good news is that yes — protective orders work for women, and that's critically important.
