The 59th Medical Wing is the Air Force's premier medical unit, located in San Antonio. The 59th MDW operates Wilford Hall Medical Center, which is now the San Antonio Military Medical Center South.

The wing provides global medical readiness capability and comprehensive peacetime healthcare benefits through education, training and research.

The wing's original  unit was formed in 1942, but the organization's official lineage only went back to 1948. , By taking on the shield and ancestry of the 59th Fighter Wing in 1995, the center was able to save the history of a World War II unit and preserve its own World War II service.
