Unique Identification (UID)

The DoD has established mandatory requirements for including unique item identification requirements on all solicitations of tangible assets issued on or after January 1, 2004 meeting certain requirements, such as an acquisition cost greater than $5,000. Although the use and impact of the UID on DoD logistics processes has generally not been determined, DLA Logistics Management Standards has incorporated the capability to convey UID date in DLMS and is supporting the effort to capture the UID as part of the Wide Area Workflow (WAWF); that is, the contract payment and receipt process. WAWF will form the basis of the DoD UID Registry to be maintained at the DLIS. See the UID website for more information: http://www.acq.osd.mil/dpap/pdi/uid/index.html.

DLA Logistics Management Standards also supports the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Logistics and Materiel Readiness (DUSD (L&MR)) effort to develop business process rules to capitalize on the UID marking.
