Description

Winslow Homer (1836-1910) is considered one of the foremost painters of the 19th century and a preeminent figure in the history of American art. Largely self-taught, Homer began his career working as a commercial illustrator, and subsequently took up oil painting and watercolor.

During the early 1870s Homer depicted scenes in and around Gloucester harbor in Massachusetts. There he began to explore the potential of watercolor to capture the look and feel of the sea. He later used the medium almost exclusively during winter trips to Florida, Cuba, and the Bahamas.

Homer’s sailing images depict the intricacies of man’s relationship to the natural world. Both vigorous and subtle, they are among the artist’s most famous works.

This magnet features a painting from the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington: Breezing Up (A Fair Wind), 1873-1876.

Magnet is 2 x 3 inches.
