The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) will present five, no-cost, regional training symposia for tribal law enforcement agencies. More than 100 Indian Country police officials will receive training on: Grant Writing and Resources - including Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) development; Recruitment and Retention -- leadership training and mentoring for first-line supervisors; and Acquisition of New Technology -- strategic planning.

After receiving a generous amount of feedback from participants of the Global Justice XML Data Model (Global JXDM) Developer's Workshop, held May 11-13, 2004, in Atlanta, Georgia, the Global JXDM Schema Subset Generation Tool (SSGT) has been released. This valuable tool provides developers with the ability to create Global JXDM schema subsets based on the previously published Rules for Schema Subsets.

At a recent press conference, Gerry Wethington, National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) President and State of Missouri's Chief Information Officer (CIO), emphasized that, due to the shortage of funds for new information technology projects, private-sector companies who want to grow their business with state government should market solutions that leverage existing state criminal justice and public safety communications resources rather than offer new solutions.

U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft announced that the U. S. Department of Justice will lead a national effort to coordinate intelligence information sharing among all law enforcement agencies using the National Criminal Intelligence Sharing Plan, a formal intelligence sharing initiative that addresses the security and intelligence needs recognized after the tragic events of September 11, 2001. To advance states' ability to automate criminal history records and interface this information with federal databases, under the National Criminal History Improvement Plan (NCHIP), more funding is needed, said Lawrence A. Greenfeld, Director of the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS). Under the NCHIP, direct funding and technical assistance is provided to states to improve the quality, timeliness, and accessibility of criminal history and related records.

In an effort to empower tribal justice agencies to better assess, plan, and implement information technology and information sharing systems, the National Center for Rural Law Enforcement (NCRLE) has developed the Tribal Justice Information Sharing System (TJISS) Web site that will soon house training manuals, self-assessment tools, purchasing guides, and equipment information, available free via download or direct mail. TJISS will also provide a manned Help Desk for technical support.

The Office of Justice Programs (OJP), together with the Global Justice Information Sharing Initiative (Global), has released the first operational version of the Global Justice Extensible Markup Language (XML) Data Model (GJXDM), Version 3.0, after a broad two-year endeavor developing an XML-based framework to enable justice and public safety communities to share information at all levels - laying the foundation for local, state, and national justice interoperability.
