Alaska

The Alaska Team Nutrition (TN) plans to focus on Alaska's School Wellness Policy Initiatives while collaborating with the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services, Division of Public Health, and other health programs. The local education agencies will be assisted with establishing wellness policies through a variety of methods. TN will conduct workshops at statewide conferences, distribute information materials, and develop a statewide model school wellness policy. In addition, training and technical assistance concentrated on developing and implementing community based local wellness policies and best practice strategies will be provided. A competitive implementation sub grant will be provided to local districts.

Colorado

Colorado's Team Nutrition (TN) Grant will provide 2005 Dietary Guidelines training to school food service personnel and educators and enable them to deliver consistent messages to children about health, nutrition, and physical activity. Mini-grants will also be offered to help schools establish wellness policies and programs for healthy environments in school and childcare settings, along with the HealthierUS School Challenge. The TN project will collaborate with other Colorado initiatives such as, the Colorado Coordinated School Health Program, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Physical Activity and Nutrition Program, and the Colorado Nutrition Network.

Georgia

The Georgia Team Nutrition (TN) Grant will fund the collaboration of State agencies and local organizations to improve the eating habits of children and their caregivers. A comprehensive collection of nutrition education training materials will be developed that specifically address the needs of children between birth and five years of age and their caregivers. Also, a calendar that advertises nutrition training events will be created and publicized on Georgia's Department of Early Care and Learning website. The training events will focus on nutrition, food preparation, healthy eating campaigns, and other related topics.

Hawaii

Hawaii's Team Nutrition (TN) is partnering up with the Hawaii State Department of Health, Hawaii Action for Healthy Kids, and the Healthy Keiki Healthy Hawaii Coordinated School Health Interagency Collaborative to boost the likelihood of success with their grant project. The TN project will sponsor evidence-driven food service trainings for cafeteria managers and a healthy school recognition program that incorporates the HealthierUS School Challenge. Additionally, TN will establish a Hawaii Wellness policy utilizing the USDA-developed tool “Changing the Scene.” Also, Hawaii's TN plans to create a statewide Wellness Policy, and establish a “Healthy Hawaii School Challenge”.

Idaho

Idaho's Team Nutrition (TN) grant involves a variety of projects that focus on promoting a healthy school nutrition environment and the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The projects include promotion of the HealthierUS School Challenge to elementary schools, marketing of the National School Lunch Program to middle and high school students, and increasing the knowledge and involvement of parents and communities in the Healthy School Nutrition Environment project. Furthermore, Idaho's TN will conduct statewide training for child care and school foodservice staff, as well as, introducing a statewide education campaign for Idaho Children on the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Indiana

Indiana's Team Nutrition (TN) will use the grant to offer two types of mini-grant opportunities. One of the mini-grant projects is to collaborate with the Action for Healthy Kids and work with approximately 250 after-school programs in Indiana to promote good nutrition and physical activity. Trainings and instructional materials will be provided to the participating schools. The second mini-grant project is for Family and Consumer Science teachers. TN plans to help teachers educate students on the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the new USDA Food Guidance System (MyPyramid). The middle and high schools students will conduct promotions on these two topics to other students so that the majority of the school will be reached with this project.

Iowa

Iowa's Team Nutrition (TN) Training grant will assist school districts with completing their local wellness policy development, along with providing trainings to foodservice staff in schools and Child and Adult Care Food Programs. The training will incorporate improvement of nutrition quality of meals, increasing physical activity and nutrition education. Furthermore, local child nutrition programs will receive mini-grants in hopes of strengthening the Team Nutrition initiative in Iowa. TN will also help schools in Iowa receive HealthierUS School Challenge certification, and will collaborate with other State agencies and organizations to help reach IA's overall TN goals.

Kansas

The Kansas Team Nutrition (TN) grant will expand upon current efforts to reduce the incidence of overweight and obesity among children and adults by providing resources, and technical assistance to school personnel. TN will continue the Power Panther Pals program for fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students, which is designed to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables and increase physical activity. This year TN will develop and implement a staff wellness program for school and child care personnel called Power Panther Professionals. Additionally, TN will collaborate with other program staff to develop and provide training and technical assistance to local school personnel about forming health councils and implementing school wellness policies.

Louisiana

Louisiana's Team Nutrition (TN) grant will be used to help fund a number of projects directed at improving the nutrition of school-aged children. TN plans to continue Family Nutrition Night, and add an English/Language Arts component aimed for elementary and middle schools. Additionally, fifty mini-grants will be offered to schools to fund the Family Nutrition Nights, along with training sessions. Furthermore, TN intends to update the Louisiana School Health Index to reflect current information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's School Health Index, the 2005 Dietary Guidelines, State rules and regulations, and new TN materials.

Maine

Maine's Team Nutrition (TN) Grant intends to improve children's food choices and opportunities for physical activity through skill-based training for child nutrition professionals and improved school nutrition environments. TN plans to offer training, technical assistance, and curriculum materials to support classroom nutrition education and physical activity. Additionally, a number of elementary and middle school teachers will be enrolled in Maine Nutrition Network's Maine-ly Nutrition Project. TN will also help schools develop and implement school wellness policies.

Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Team Nutrition grant intends to promote wellness by assisting Massachusetts school districts with establishing and implementing district wellness policies. In order to reach this goal, regional wellness policy trainings will be held statewide, along with the creation of a website where districts can access and submit policy information. Additionally, the TN grant aims to improve high school students' nutrition environment by continuing support of a program developed by the Massachusetts Action for Healthy Kids. This tool engages student leaders in the process of evaluating and addressing physical activity and nutrition program and policy gaps in their high school.

Michigan

Michigan's Team Nutrition (TN) project will work with local educational agencies to establish nutrition and physical activity policies aimed at improving school foodservice standards, nutrition education, and physical activity promotion, and will be tested in thirty pilot schools. In addition, the TN Project will develop a training system for foodservice staff, while helping schools increase reimbursable school meals participation and decrease à la carte sales of unhealthy foods. To further assist local schools, the TN Project will offer mini-grants for conducting nutrition education and physical activity, and encourage involvement in the HealtherUS School Challenge. Also, existing state and local organizations such as, the United Dairy Industry of Michigan, Michigan Action for Healthy Kids Coalition, Michigan Departments of Community Health and Education, will be partnering up with TN to help reach the goals.

Mississippi

The Mississippi Team Nutrition (TN) Grant aims to promote health and wellness throughout the state by building upon the recently launched "Health is Academic" Initiative. The Mississippi TN plans to provide mini-grants to schools in hopes of involving parents, students, school administrators, and the community in development of nutrition and physical activity wellness policies. Additionally, the Mississippi TN Project will develop and deliver marketing training for child nutrition staff that will focus on healthful choices and improving child nutrition images. To further promote healthy school environments statewide, the schools awarded mini-grants will have the opportunity to participate in Sharing Mississippi Success Stories.

Missouri

Missouri's Team Nutrition (TN) project will have a strong focus on increasing children's consumption of fruit and vegetables, and promoting nutrition and physical activity policies at schools and child care facilities. This will be accomplished by holding two different trainings and awarding fourteen mini-grants to schools and child care facilities. The first training will concentrate on fruit and vegetable availability and appeal to school and preschool age children. The following training will be centered on motivating schools and child care facilities to develop nutrition and physical activity policies. Additionally, TN will send out email updates to schools and child care centers, and also provide a website that will include success stories and technical assistance opportunities.

Montana

The Montana Team Nutrition (TN) Grant aims to develop a promotional campaign and pick two model schools to encourage other schools to take the HealthierUS School Challenge. Through the newly developed Healthier Montana Menu Challenge, the grant will support and recognize schools and childcare programs that offer menus which include whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and low-fat entrée and dairy choices. It will also support school districts in developing and implementing a wellness policy that meets USDA's requirements. Furthermore, the TN grant will enhance statewide training efforts to school and childcare program personnel about the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and develop training for food service staff about the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point to ensure the preparation of safe school meals.

Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania Team Nutrition (TN) grant will support healthier food choices and physical activity habits among school age children by providing mini-grants to twenty after school programs. The awarded schools will implement lessons from the USDA's Power of Choice and Action for Healthy Kids Afterschool Program - “ReCharge,” and provide parent outreach activities designed to encourage parents to be good role models for nutrition and physical activity. TN will provide support and training to the schools so that nutrition and physical activity can be integrated into after school programs. Furthermore, TN grant activities are designed to encourage student and parent involvement in school teams working on local wellness policies.

South Carolina

By utilizing the Team Nutrition (TN) training grant, the South Carolina Department of Education and a coalition of partners will implement “A Collaborative Environmental Approach to Reducing Childhood Obesity.” This effort will provide the opportunity for all of the school districts in South Carolina to receive training and assistance on how to obtain the HealthierUS School Challenge Certification and implement regulation of the USDA's required Wellness Policy. In addition the TN grant will provide mini-grants to at least fifty elementary schools to assist them in meeting the HealthierUS School Challenge.

South Dakota

The South Dakota Team Nutrition (TN) grant aims to ensure that food service staff will have current training for preparing healthy foods, teaching nutrition, promoting healthy eating and physical activity, food safety, menu planning, management, and communication skills. One-on-one training, technical assistance, graduate level nutrition courses, and nutrition curriculum will be provided to schools and local education agencies to help generate a positive change. In addition, TN will help local agencies develop wellness practices, and promote the HealthierUS School Challenge to elementary school staff and administrators.

West Virginia

Using the Team Nutrition (TN) Grant, West Virginia TN will fuel their project called Students Leading the Change. This project aims to create student action councils that will advocate for healthier school and community environments. The student groups will attend state-wide workshops and develop actions plans, while also serving as after-school mentors. In addition, the student teams will present their successes to other schools and local policy makers. Furthermore, West Virginia's Team Nutrition plans to offer a supportive nutrition and marketing college course for food service staff that will be participating in the project.

Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Team Nutrition (TN) Project will use a variety of methods to advocate healthy eating and physical activity among children. One part involves intense nutrition training to at least one hundred teachers who will help implement accurate and appropriate nutrition education. Along with the training, the TN Project will establish interactive nutrition and health homework to engage both students and parents. In addition, the TN Project will focus on the promotion of the School Breakfast Program, as well as help the food and nutrition services staff meet the HealthierUS School Challenge. Following implementation of the project, the Wisconsin team will develop and disseminate a manual to include resources available to schools and local success stories.

Wyoming

Wyoming's Team Nutrition (TN) grant has three goals to help overcome the rising health problems in Wyoming. First, TN plans to hold a series of regional workshops that will provide communities with tools and information to encourage community partners to form a team approach to childhood wellness. Second, TN intends to work with a variety of child care and early childhood development organizations and provide training. Third, TN aims to implement training for food service workers so that they can become advocates for the children they serve daily. This training will help food service workers become proactive and involved members of community wellness teams.
