How can we improve the new FCC.gov?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. New site emphasizes style over substance

The new site looks very pretty, but unfortunately it appears to have been designed by graphic designers and not by anyone who actually uses the FCC's site.

Someone who actually participates in FCC proceedings wants to know what the most recent actions are that have been taken by the Commission and its Bureaus. This person also wants to know about meetings, workshops, and changes to comment deadlines. This person also wants to be able to quickly access the relevant detailed information from each bureau.

All of this important information is buried or truncated to the point of being unusable under…

    • Site needs 2 front ends.. one for consumers and others for regular users/professionals

Those of us who live at this site prefer the old way with everything right there. This new site is too "consumerish" and is great for Mabel Brown from Squattingpigeon, MO who is visiting the website to complain about getting calls at 2 in the morning despite her insistence that she's on the "do not call" list.. This new site (IMHO) disenfranchises the professional user. Also, with budget cuts and a possible government shutdown, I would not exactly put candy coating the website at the top of the list. Perhaps staffing up the Audio Bureau would be more prudent.

We are looking into ways to provide a tailored experience for frequent users of FCC.gov based on feedback we have heard from users.

Would love to hear suggestions on features you would be most interested in adding to a “professional user” interface as we begin to develop this.

Daily Digest? Improved EDOCs search? Easy access to ECFS?

        Send us your ideas.

      • New website = New Coke

The FCC's web site should be designed to further the agency's regulatory mission and allow individuals and organizations to transact business more efficiently with the agency than they could in a paper or face-to-face world. Rather than focus on pretty graphics designed to maximize PR and image and present the Commission as hip and cutting-edge, the Commission should focus on improving the functionality of its electronic databases and database interfaces, the accessibility of information, and the amount of information. That's what loyal users really want, and the agency seems to have forgotten that. I can't help but think that the…

Thanks Alan. We heard similar suggestions during some of our user testing sessions last week. We’re looking at some new color treatments to brighten that section.

Another question: what did you think of the “follow bar” that scrolls with you at the top of the page? Was that also difficult to notice because it was too dark?

            • Roll out this idea to ALL .Gov sites

Propose this site layout to all .Gov entities. It might not work for all; but for say, National Labs, it would be a plus.

              • Site needs IA more than design

This new site design is beautiful; it’s impressive for a government page. I feel like the design isn’t really the issue though. The information on the site is still poorly organized, and seems to assume you understand the government lingo the FCC works under. I think the FCC should consider reworking the site to focus on helping the public understand and navigate the issues the FCC deals with, and not on a flashy “web 2.0” look.
                Consider hiring an Information Architect…

                  • Gracefully degrade where javascript is used

Javascript is heavily used on various parts of the page such as the top navigation, banner graphics, view settings bar, slideshow, and more. These items should gracefully degrade when javascript is disabled. The menus should still work, the slideshow should display just one item and possibly hide controls, etc.

You should be able to Follow up or add more information on existing complaints. Also similiar to the search here, one should be able to look for existing or similiar complaints to add their information to. Less work for the in terms of consolidating while revealing who the major trouble makers are!

The customer NOT receiving the calls should not have to be the one to have to solve this problem. The FCC should be addressing this issue and at the very least make it easier for the frustrated customer to lodge a complaint on the website.

Reestablish a way for frequent users to see all the most frequently used links on one or two short pages (think laptop). Scrolling through "Encyclopedias" is fine for beginners but very inefficient for regular users. And don't leave any old links out. You might not think we use them but unless you track usage, don't assume that. Here is an example: under the new WTB page, what happen to the wireless databases links that let you then run a General Menu Report Search?

                                    • Duplicate links at the top and bottom of the page, not necessary, the page is awesome, about time.

Still much and duplicate info and links on the home page. Eliminate links at the bottom which are duplicates of links at the top of the page. News room is fine but show only the three most important and three featured. The look is awesome, very modern and it was about time. Congrats Great Job. Keep it up!!!!!!!!!!!

                                        • Do we really need to pay someone to update a Facebook and Twitter account using taxpayer dollars?

The FCC does not need a Facebook account. The twitter feed should simply be the information coming straight from the public released documents. Taxpayer dollars should not go towards paying someone to post on these services.
