Annual Bibliography of Significant Advances in Dietary Supplement Research 2000

The Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announces the release of the second issue of the Annual Bibliography of Significant Advances in Dietary Supplement Research. Developed as a joint effort of ODS and the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), this publication presents significant research in the dietary supplement field for the year 2000.

"In response to the positive reception of the 1999 bibliography, we are pleased to release the 2000 edition. Interest and use of dietary supplements continues to be prevalent in the United States population, which heightens the importance of sound scientific research in this field," said Paul M. Coates, Ph.D., Director of ODS. " This bibliography provides an excellent opportunity to give well-deserved recognition to the scientists conducting dietary supplement research."

For the 2000 issue of the bibliography, ODS and CHPA received over 450 original research article nominations from 37 peer-reviewed journals. An international team of expert reviewers in the fields of nutrition and botanical sciences and public health reviewed and ranked the articles. The top 25 articles were selected for publication.

The articles for the 2000 bibliography included research in the following areas:

"The ODS is delighted to partner again with CHPA on this publication that highlights scientifically sound research on dietary supplements and their role in health maintenance," said Rebecca B. Costello, Ph.D., Deputy Director of ODS. We envision this bibliography will serve as a useful reference source for nutrition and health professionals, educators, and health communicators, as well as the scientists who conduct the research."
